The skin is also under stress: what do experts advise in such cases?

It reacts to excitement no less than the heart and blood vessels. We know that experiences can provoke problems with the cardiovascular system, resulting in headaches, dizziness, and even heart attacks. And how are stress and skin diseases related?

-What does the expression – stressed skin mean?

– Immune cells under the influence of stress release the organic compound histamine, – says Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatologist-cosmetologist. – It provokes redness of the skin. Quite often, a person experiencing unpleasant emotions feels like something is crawling on his skin. And at the moment of stress, adrenaline dominates in people, due to which blood vessels narrow and spasm. As a result, the skin becomes gray and dull. It is not for nothing that they say: she turned gray or turned gray from grief.- Some people’s face does not turn gray in stressful moments, but on the contrary – it bleeds.

-Why is this happening?

This is a consequence of the stress hormone cortisol. One of my still quite young patients suffered from such a problem for a long time. The woman had a very stressful job, as they saynot a day without nerves, and in particularly tense moments the skin was covered with red spots. They later disappeared. But later a red vascular network appeared – and it remained even when the woman was calm.Cortisol has another feature that is unpleasant for the skin: it provokes increased activity of the sebaceous glands, which can lead to the appearance of blackheads (acne). And since stress has a negative effect on local immunity, it becomes more difficult for the skin to resist pathogenic microorganisms, and acne progresses.More recently, I had to treat a young patient withextremely severe acne. The young man’s face was covered with blue-red nodules and abscesses. It turned out that this problem arose with the beginning of the war. Life under shelling (the boy is from the eastern region of Ukraine), days and nights in basements, running away from his native home – all the experiences affected the condition of the skin of a generally healthy child.

-Is good skin care alone enough to treat acne?

When it comes to the effects of stress, treatment should be comprehensive. The patient may need not only special skin care products, but also light sedatives. It is also important to adjust the diet. For example, frequent consumption of sweets (people like to “eat” stress with them) can aggravate the problem.Plants also help. So, the infusion of chamomile and calendula refreshes and tones pale skin, and the infusion of oak bark is especially effective for redness and inflammatory processes. The tannins contained in it block the hyperfunction of the sebaceous glands.
