The mustache grows like a man’s. What are the causes of excessive hair growth in women?
This cosmetic defect may indicate serious health problems.
About 35 percent of women suffer from excessive hair growth where it is not normally expected for the fair sex, such as on the face, inner thighs, arms, legs, and mammary glands. Why does this happen and how to deal with this problem?
“It’s about hirsutism (male pattern hair growth),” says Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatocosmetologist. — It occurs, as a rule, as a result of a malfunction of the adrenal glands, ovaries, and when there is an excess production of male hormones (androgens) in the female body.
The problem may also be a consequence of long-term use of medications that have such side effects. After all, it can be provoked by chronic stress and exhausting starvation. Hereditary hirsutism also happens – in the family, women of different generations have excess hair. To find out what is really the matter, you need to contact a gynecologist, endocrinologist and undergo certain examinations.
— As a rule, women want to get rid of excess hair as soon as possible, so they first go to a cosmetologist, a dermatologist. Is it not possible to simply influence the problem from the outside?
– Of course, you can. There are effective modern technologies that help in this. For example, laser hair removal. But the problem may return if you do not understand its internal cause. Unexpected hair growth is an external signal sent by the body. For example, it can be about such serious disorders as polycystic ovary syndrome, the development of tumors of the adrenal glands, ovaries, and pituitary gland. And, for example, in one of my young patients, increased hair growth, as it turned out, was associated with undiagnosed diabetes. The woman consulted an endocrinologist, took the blood sugar level under control, and then we eliminated the problem of excessive hair growth.
— If excess hair is the result of an increased level of male sex hormones, how to deal with it?
— An endocrinologist (gynecologist) can prescribe antiandrogen drugs. They reduce the level of testosterone in the blood and reduce the sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens. Then the effect of cosmetology procedures is more stable.
