Why are prescription drugs becoming a rarity?
And who needs them in the first place?
Medicines according to an individual prescription are, first of all, an opportunity to choose the composition and dose of the drug taking into account not only the pathology, but also the age of the patient, – says Olena Reshetnyk, a family doctor of the highest category.
That is, ready-made medicines, which are usually not cheap, may not work so effective?
– If we are talking, for example, about antimicrobial eye drops, then often only an antibiotic to which a specific pathogen is sensitive (this is determined thanks to laboratory diagnostics) can provide the patient with the desired effect. This is, in fact, the case when factory drugs are either not effective enough, or they simply do not exist.
No less important is such a factor as the price. Here is a simple example. For the treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory tract with an allergic component, doctors often prescribe modern imported “Pulmolor”.
The price of 20 tablets reaches 100 hryvnias, which is a dose for 10 days. A simple mixture for inhalation based on saline solution and dexamethasone, made according to the prescription, gives an effect no worse than these pills. It will not cost even 20 hryvnias.
Thousands of patients who need the use of suppositories and mixtures (pharmacies prepare them mainly from domestic ingredients) could significantly save on medicines according to an individual prescription. I’m not talking about patients with arterial hypertension who are cured by “pills from pressure” constantly but for years.

This is not only a special dosage and composition, but also the absence of preservatives and dyes, which are widely used in industrial production. It is they who often provoke allergic reactions in patients. And then the treatment of skin diseases is ineffective.
Quite often, advertised drugs are almost indistinguishable in composition from prescription drugs, and the difference in price is striking. For example, popular lotions for the treatment of such a common problem as acne (zineritis, etc.) consist of an antibiotic, zinc salts. They are sold mainly in small (up to 30 ml) bottles and cost a lot of hryvnias. A similar composition and an equally effective effect is the classic acne treatment.
The name may not be impressive, but the dermatologist, considering the patient’s condition, can supplement the recipe with salicylic or boric acid, sulfur, etc. The course of treatment will be more economical or not twice as much. And there is nothing surprising in this: the fact that the costs of packaging, marketing promotion, logistics, etc. are not affected by the costs of packaging, marketing promotion, logistics, etc. allows the buyer to save money.
– Why then are there so few pharmacies that can prepare prescription drugs?
– The fact is that this type of activity, as an exception, remained only in pharmacies, usually communal and state-owned, – says Volodymyr Rudenko, director of the Pharmacy Professional Association of Ukraine, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
– There are a few of them, although in the past there were no less than two-thirds. The demand for such drugs by individual prescription is particularly high in pediatrics, dermatology, neurology, phytotherapy. In general, prescription drugs are indispensable in the treatment of children.
