Pityriasis: what is this disease and how is it treated

The first symptoms of ringworm are similar to a cold. This disease often worsens in the spring and as a result of stress. Body temperature rises, headache and muscle aches. And then pink rashes appear on the skin: first one spot, then they become larger, they cover the trunk, neck, sometimes face. This entails not only physical, but also psychological discomfort.

– Pink lichen or pityriasis is a dermatological disease that has an infectious and allergic nature, – explains Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatologist.

— The causative agent of this dermatosis has not been definitively established, but according to the most common theory, it is provoked by one of the varieties of the herpes virus. There are different forms of pityriasis. For example, with an inverse rash, they appear on the folds of the limbs, face, palms, and soles, and with a papular multiple, small pink nodules “jump out” on the body and limbs. All this is accompanied by severe itching. And some huge spots – seven centimeters in size. With miliary pityriasis, rashes also appear on the oral mucosa. This disease is very insidious. I remember one patient, by the way, a doctor-surgeon, with pityriasis, who was convinced that he had the flu. Because there were muscle pains, fever, weakness. Suddenly, a large bright spot appeared on the skin of the back. Manifestations of typical rosacea, if it is not treated correctly, can remain on the body from one to three months, and on average – six weeks. A feature of this pathology is a cyclic course with exacerbation in the spring-autumn period. The reason is a decrease in immunity due to a previously experienced SARS or severe stress.

— How does this lichen differ from, for example, the better-known shearing lichen?

– These diseases, although they are somewhat similar, have a different nature. To determine the diagnosis, the doctor examines a sample of the patient’s skin under a microscope, which allows to rule out a fungal infection (as with ringworm or ringworm).

– How is pityriasis treated?

— Therapy usually includes the use of antihistamines, as well as ointments with corticosteroids that reduce itching. During the disease, it is recommended to avoid hot baths, intense friction of the skin, and the use of hard washcloths and towels, as this can increase the amount of rashes. It is important to treat pityriasis in time and competently, because the disease is dangerous with complications. When combing the rash, an infection can get into the wound, causing purulent inflammation of the skin. In this case, antibiotics will be needed. Diet is also important. With lichen rosacea, it is not recommended to eat citrus fruits, fatty types of meat, smoked and canned products, legumes, nuts, chocolate – these products are considered allergenic.
