Herringbone disease: what causes erysipelas and how to get rid of it
People call this disease erysipelas. With the appearance of its first signs, you should consult a doctor.
The disease is accompanied by chills, lethargy, drowsiness. Sometimes, already in the first hours, a strong throbbing pain in the head appears.
— Erythema is an infectious skin disease caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, says Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatocosmetologist. – They can often be found on human skin, but they do not affect everyone. Hereditary predisposition (a feature of the immune response to infection), the body’s ability to resist the pathogen, is important. It decreases due to irrational nutrition, stress.
The source of infection can be a patient with any streptococcal infection (angina, scarlet fever), raw freshwater fish. Among my patients I have had quite a few who have developed scabies on their hands after being pricked by a bone while cleaning fish. But the lower limbs suffer most often, especially in warm weather, when a person sweats – a cut, scratch, insect bite is enough. Streptococcus gets into the wound and the inflammatory process starts.
Often, ringworm begins with a crack in the spaces between the fingers, on the heels. In particular, this often happens to people who constantly wear closed shoes in the warm season, which makes their feet sweat. The skin in the area of inflammation reddens, hurts when palpated. The disease may be accompanied by fever.
— Is it true that dysentery is a disease mainly of older people?
— Dysentery is quite often diagnosed in elderly, debilitated people who have accompanying chronic ailments — diabetes, impaired blood supply in the limbs, eczema and mycosis, which open the way to infection. The causative agent of the disease also affects young people, whose work is associated with frequent microtraumas of the skin. An inflammatory process can be caused by streptococcus, which has “precipitated” in the throat. A person turns into a reservoir of infection.
– How is dysentery treated?
— Antibiotics and antimicrobial agents. The doctor can prescribe a special analysis that determines the sensitivity of the pathogen to certain drugs. After all, unfortunately, some lose their effectiveness due to the fact that bacteria, in particular streptococci, acquire resistance to the antibiotic. As a result, he is unable to either kill them or stop reproduction.
— Once upon a time, erysipelas was “ordered” and “burned” by healers, and the affected skin was sprinkled with hemp ash. They say it helped…
— I doubt that such methods are effective. It can be assumed that hot ash has a harmful effect on the causative agent that has concentrated on the surface. But when there is already an inflammatory process in the skin, heating can only harm.
You can’t waste time with erysipelas. In severe cases, it can be complicated by a purulent inflammatory process and even skin necrosis. With a prolonged course, the patient is at risk of persistent lymphostasis (elephantism) of the limbs, streptococcal sepsis, gangrene (this happens most often when another infection joins the streptococcus), exacerbation of coronary heart disease, etc. Therefore, with the appearance of the first signs of hysteria, you should contact a specialist.
