Acne on the skin: why they appear and what genetics, fast food and antibacterial soap have to do with it

Quite often, the cause of acne is excessive cleanliness.

Pustules on the skin of the face, back, chest are a problem that often bothers teenagers. But it is also relevant for people aged 25+, 30+ and even older. Why do pimples appear and how to say goodbye to them forever?

— It all starts with the appearance of comedones — open (black dots on the skin) and closed (white pustules), — says Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatocosmetologist. — The reason for this is a disruption in the work of the sebaceous glands, which produce a secret (sebum). Normally, it moisturizes the skin and protects it from the negative effects of the environment, bacteria and fungi. If the pores are blocked by sebum, then the bacteria, which are always on the surface of the skin and are able to penetrate inside, multiply and provoke inflammation. Most often, closed comedones turn into classic acne (pustules – nodules with a white head, surrounded by inflamed skin). This is a kind of “volcano” with purulent contents on the skin.

— Acne is believed to be a problem of adolescence. However, it often bothers even older people. Why?

— In adolescence, hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands is associated with the hormonal boom that people experience during this period. In adulthood, the cause of the problem may be too high a level of androgens (male sex hormones), which stimulate the production of sebum, or excessive sensitivity to testosterone. These two features are often transmitted with genes. Therefore, if parents have a skin problem, then with a high probability it awaits children.

Nutrition also matters. Consumption of foods with a high glycemic index (fast carbohydrates, especially fast food, fried, fatty foods) provokes an increase in blood glucose levels and a sharp release of insulin, which in turn raises testosterone levels.

Acne can also be a signal of problems with the digestive system, thyroid gland, kidney and adrenal gland diseases, etc.

— How is classic acne (acne) treated and how to care for the skin so that it does not appear?

— Locally or systemically, antibacterial, hormonal drugs, retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) can be prescribed, laser treatment, phototherapy are used. Various cosmetic procedures, such as peeling, are helpful in treatment.

There are special solutions, creams that reduce the inflammatory process and help get rid of the “volcano” without consequences. I advise you to consult a doctor — he will tell you which drug is most suitable for a specific skin type and stage of the disease.

To prevent the disease (acne), it is necessary to use mild skin cleansers. It should become a daily mandatory procedure, like, for example, brushing your teeth. Although quite often the cause of acne is excessive cleanliness. Among my patients, there are quite a few who fought the rash by constantly wiping the skin with an alcohol solution and washing with antibacterial soap. This led to overdrying of the epidermis and destruction of its protective layer. But sebum did not stop being produced, so the problem only intensified.

And yet. One of the biggest mistakes that patients make is squeezing pustules. As a result, the layers of the epidermis are injured, which opens the gate for microbes deep into the skin. As a result, acne becomes much more. This later provokes the appearance of age spots and scars on the skin. Therefore, no matter how much you want to squeeze out the abscess, do not do it.
