Papillomas on the body: why they appear and how to get rid of these neoplasms

Benign growths can degenerate into malignant tumors.

Many people suddenly develop small, flesh-colored growths on their skin. Their favorite location is the face, décolleté area, armpits, so it is impossible not to notice these neoplasms. Sometimes there are a lot of them. For example, on the neck they look like an untidy necklace. And the problem is not only unaesthetic, but also, as doctors warn, in the threat of papilloma degeneration into cancer.

— The cause of the appearance of such neoplasms is the human papillomavirus (HPV), — says Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatologist-cosmetologist. — To date, more than a hundred different strains of HPV have been identified. Approximately 40 of them lead to the formation of papillomas. And the pathogen enters the body through close contact with the carrier, through infected towels, shaving equipment, fresh wound surfaces, cracks, abrasions on the skin or mucous membrane. Therefore, in men, the favorite place for the dislocation of papillomas (which look like a soft or dense tumor on a leg 1-2 centimeters in size) is the hairy part of the face, which is often injured during shaving, and in women – the neck, areas under the mammary glands, back (the skin there is very delicate and can be injured even due to friction with a scarf, collar, chains, bra). Quite often, a whole scattering of papillomas appears.

Usually, a person’s immunity copes with HPV. The latent (hidden) period can last from several weeks to several years, or even a lifetime. However, there are a number of factors that provoke the activation of the pathogen: a decrease in immunity due to stress or other viral diseases, in particular seasonal ARVI; metabolic disorders, such as diabetes; chronic diseases of the digestive and endocrine systems. Papillomas often appear during pregnancy. This is due to hormonal changes in the woman’s body.

— How dangerous are papillomas?

— Even multiple ones are usually safe and most often do not cause discomfort, but the growths can be injured. If this happens, and even if there are a lot of papillomas, I advise you to consult a doctor. The fact is that these benign neoplasms can degenerate into malignant tumors.

— How are papillomas treated?

— There are several effective and affordable methods for removing papillomas: cryodestruction (cold splitting), electrocoagulation (destruction of growths with high-frequency electric current), laser (the neoplasms seem to evaporate), etc. The choice of method for removing papillomas depends on their type and localization. In addition, the doctor simultaneously prescribes treatment to the patient to support immunity, sometimes antiviral drugs are also needed.

— Are folk methods of removing papillomas effective, for example, using celandine juice?

— Unfortunately, such methods have no proven effectiveness and do not help get rid of papillomas forever. Moreover: there is a risk of burns, scarring on the skin. And the papilloma “jumps out” in another place.

And yet. You should not confuse papillomas with warts. They are really similar and the cause of their appearance is also certain types of HPV. But papillomas, unlike warts, have a leg, due to which the neoplasm resembles a hanging drop, and its surface is soft. Warts have a rough one. They are usually located on the fingers, palms, and soles. And you should not put up with them either, because when injured, warts can cause a serious inflammatory process. And they are contagious with close contact.
